Liverpool move looms for Xabi Alonso due to a clause in Bayer Leverkusen contract

12 October, 2023

In a recent report from Germany, it has come to light that Xabi Alonso, the former football maestro turned manager, might have a plan in place for a potential return to Liverpool, thanks to an interesting clause in his current contract.

Alonso has been receiving widespread acclaim for his impressive start to his senior managerial career, particularly since taking the reins at Bayer Leverkusen.

His journey to the Bundesliga club began in October 2022 when he left his role at Real Sociedad B. In the year since, he has overseen 47 games, securing 26 wins, 11 draws, and 10 defeats. Follow your favourite Premier League team with attractive football betting odds from Nextbet.

Leverkusen’s performance under Alonso’s guidance has been noteworthy. They finished sixth in the German top flight last season and reached the semi-finals of the Europa League. Currently, they lead the league standings and their Europa League group.

Not surprisingly, this success has garnered interest from other clubs, including Tottenham before they appointed Ange Postecoglou. In August, Alonso signed a two-year contract extension with Leverkusen, tying him to the club until 2026.

However, it appears that this new contract includes an intriguing provision. According to Sport BILD, Alonso has an agreement with Leverkusen that allows him to leave if he receives offers from three specific clubs: Liverpool, Real Madrid, or Bayern Munich.

These clubs hold special significance for Alonso as he has represented each of them at the highest level of football. He joined Liverpool in 2004, later moved to Real Madrid in 2009, and concluded his playing career with Bayern Munich from 2014 to 2017.

While Liverpool might be eager to have Alonso back, it’s worth noting that the situations at Real Madrid and Bayern Munich might make them more likely destinations.

Carlo Ancelotti is expected to leave Real Madrid next summer, and it’s widely speculated that he will become the new manager for the Brazilian national team. At Bayern Munich, the managerial position is often less than stable, and any continued success for Alonso at Leverkusen could complicate things further.

At Liverpool, the hope is that Jurgen Klopp will extend his stay beyond his current contract, which, like Alonso’s, runs until 2026. Klopp has expressed newfound energy in building “Liverpool 2.0,” and with his team in its early stages of development, it’s plausible that he might choose to stay even longer.

If Klopp does decide to stay beyond 2026, the only potential roadblock could be a pact with his family regarding a sabbatical. This agreement has been postponed since 2015 when he quickly took over as Liverpool’s manager. The future for both Alonso and Klopp remains intriguing, with a potential reunion in Liverpool not entirely out of the question.
