David de Gea rejects contract offer at Manchester United; Red Devils monitoring Raya

31 March, 2023

Spanish shotstopper David de Gea has his heart set on a move away from Old Trafford, if reports are to be believed. The Manchester United veteran is believed to have rejected the club’s offer for a contract extension, as per reputable sources.

The 32-year old’s contract expires at the end of the season, and the club were reportedly eager on prolonging de Gea’s stay in Manchester, a possibility that looks far-fetched as things stand. De Gea had previously signed a contract in 2018, at a time when he was in the form of his life, and agreed to a five-year deal on massive wages that made him the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world. The Spaniard is currently on £375,000 a week, and the club’s extension offer supposedly offered him a lot less than that figure.

De Gea has reportedly not taken well to the offer made by the club, and has rejected the proposal, with an intention to walk out as a free agent at the end of his contract tenure. The Premier League winner has on several occasions been linked with a move away from the Red Devils, including the famous “fax machine” incident several years ago, when it was widely believed that he would join Real Madrid.

Erik Ten Hag’s arrival was widely believed to be the final nail in the coffin, as questions have repeatedly been asked of the Spaniard’s distribution, an integral part of Ten Hag’s coaching philosophy. So far, the Dutchman has opted to focus on other areas, and due credit to De Gea, he has also been fantastic, managing to find his peak form again. The Spanish veteran perhaps looks at this as the perfect opportunity to walk out on his own terms.

United have in the past few days been increasingly linked with Brentford star David Raya, who is also on the verge of leaving, with just a year left on his deal. Brighton and Hove Albion star Robert Sanchez, who has gone out of favour with Roberto De Zerbi, is another keeper Untied could target should the veteran leave the Red Devils this summer.
