Australia’s WTC Triumph Leaves India’s Captain and Coach Seeking Answers
Last week, Australia clinched the coveted World Test Championship (WTC) trophy for the first time by defeating India by a commanding 209 runs at The Oval. The resounding loss in the final has left Indian captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid searching for explanations, as their team once again faltered in a crucial do-or-die match at an ICC event.
This is not the first time that India has stumbled in a knockout match under the leadership of Rohit and Dravid. They were eliminated in the semifinals of the 2022 T20 World Cup by eventual champions England. As India gears up to host the 50-over World Cup later this year, fans are growing increasingly concerned about their team’s underwhelming performances in crucial matches of ICC tournaments. The aftermath of the WTC final defeat has prompted a series of questions. A senior official from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that internal discussions will be held to evaluate the team’s inconsistent results. While major overhauls may not be on the cards, the roles of batting coach Vikram Rathour and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey may come under scrutiny.
“It’s not that simple. We can’t outrightly say that they have not been up to the mark. We have had victories in India. Reaching the final of the World Test Championship is no small feat,” the BCCI official stated.
“However, the performance overseas has been unsatisfactory. At the same time, we need to consider the upcoming World Cup in four months’ time, and we cannot afford knee-jerk reactions. But there will certainly be internal discussions,” revealed a senior official as quoted by InsideSport.
In terms of team management, Rahul Dravid, the current head coach, will continue in his role until his contract expires after the forthcoming 50-over World Cup scheduled for October-November.
“We haven’t had any discussions with Rahul. He will remain as the head coach until the World Cup. His future will depend on him and the outcome of the World Cup. For now, there is no question regarding his position,” added the official.
India’s next cricketing assignment will be a tour of the Caribbean in July. They are set to face West Indies in a multi-format series comprising of two Tests, three ODIs, and five T20Is. It will be an opportunity for the Indian team to regroup and bounce back after the disappointment of the WTC final loss. Get the latest updates from the world of cricket only on Nextbet Sports.
