In a generation where Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal dominated the court, it was difficult for many tennis players to get their hands on the grand slam titles. However, despite not getting plenty of those trophies, some of them went on to make a big place in the hearts of tennis fans, one of them was the Argentine legend Juan Martin del Potro. 

The tall lanky player who had one of the most lethal serves in the game, Del Potro went on to win the US Open in 2009, which remains his only grand slam win. Del Potro was the only player outside of the above-mentioned big three to win the Grand Slam title from 2005 to 2012, over a period of 30 grand slams. 

The Argentine, known as the Two of Tandil, last played on the tour in February 2022 in front of his home fans in Buenos Aires where he said it was too difficult for him to continue training and he was stepping away from the game so that he could live without pain on a day-to-day basis while leaving the door on a comeback just a little bit ajar.

Now in an interview with South American sports journalist Danny Miche, del Potro has said that he will resume training and see how his body reacts, keeping his options open till his favourite tournament, the US Open.

“I love tennis, it will never be a problem to pick up a racquet and see how I feel. The physical problem and my knee are things I work on every day. I’m going to leave that window open, at least until the US Open as I said. This is the most special tournament for me. I still have time, I will start training, see how my leg and knee react and if I can do it or not,” del Potro as per quotes translated by We Love Tennis.

Del Potro is one of the most revered players in the tennis circuits who always received massive appreciation from the fans whenever he was in the middle. His farewell match at his home town proved to be quite an emotional affair as well, with fans turning up in big numbers.
