Paarl Royals announce list of retained players for SA20 2024 edition

3 August, 2023

Paarl Royals, a franchise owned by Royals Sports Group, has announced its lineup of 15 players who will be part of the 2024 edition of South Africa’s exciting T20 tournament, SA20. The team, based at Boland Park, has decided to retain the core of its players, with 12 South Africans set to play alongside three overseas players in the upcoming league season.

The retained squad includes prominent South African players such as David Miller, spin bowlers Tabraiz Shamsi and Bjorn Fortuin, fast bowler Lungi Ngidi, versatile all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo, top-order batter Wihan Lubbe, and wicket-keeper batter Dane Vilas. Alongside these, the Royals have also held onto domestic talents, including batter Mitchell van Buuren, all-rounder Ferisco Adams, and pace bowlers Codi Yusuf and Evan Jones. Sticking to their winning formula, the Royals have chosen to keep their experienced overseas players in the team. This trio comprises Jos Buttler, who captained the T20 World Cup-winning team, Jason Roy from England, and Obed McCoy, a skilled seam bowler from the West Indies. In addition to retaining players, the Royals have made a noteworthy addition to their lineup: 17-year-old pacer Kwena Maphaka. His signing makes him the youngest uncapped player to join SA20.

Looking back on their performance, the Royals made it to the semifinals in the inaugural SA20 edition. However, the team will be without the services of English veteran Eoin Morgan, who announced his retirement from all forms of cricket earlier in the year. As part of their strategic moves, all-rounder Corbin Bosch has been traded to Pretoria, while spinner Imraan Manack and seam bowler Ramon Simmonds have been released from the squad.

Kumar Sangakkara, Director of Cricket for the Royals, shared his thoughts on the retained players, saying, “The previous season of SA20 was a valuable learning experience for all involved, and it provided us with a wealth of insights as a team. As we step into the new season, we’ve decided to maintain a core group of players, predominantly composed of top-quality South African talent, complemented by experienced international players.”
